Beximco workers lift highway blockade after five days

Workers of Beximco Industrial Park lifted blockade from Dhaka-Tangail highway in Gazipur’s Kashimpur area after five days following assurance from the authorities of meeting their demand.
The workers had blocked Chakraborty intersection for five consecutive days till yesterday demanding their overdue salaries for October.
This morning, they entered the factory but they are yet to resumed work, Md Mohiuddin, investigation officer of Kashimpur Police Station, said around 9:00am.
Kashimpur Police Station’s Sub-Inspector Jahangir Hossain told The Daily Star, “I am on duty in front of the Beximco Industrial Park, and the workers are no longer on the highway. Traffic movement on the Dhaka-Tangail highway is now normal.”
According to the SI, a senior official from Beximco Industrial Park addressed the workers last night following a negotiation in Dhaka. The workers were assured that their outstanding salaries for October would be paid soon. Following this assurance, they decided to end their road blockade and return to the factory.
The industrial police reported that Beximco Industrial Park employs around 41,000 workers across its garment and ceramic factories. Workers from the garment division had been protesting for a week, demanding their October arrears.
Yesterday evening, they escalated their protest by blocking the Chandra-Nabinagar road. However, the blockade was lifted later after Beximco authorities pledged to meet their demands.
Attempts to contact the Beximco Industrial Park authorities for comments on the matter were unsuccessful.
